Write to our Politicians The following draft letter & email addresses has been provided to residents of Willowdale to communicate their point of view to our political leadership at the Federal, Provincial, and Municipal levels of government. As 70% of Willowdale’s residents first language is not English, this letter has been created at the request of residents who are unable to communicate their opposition to the modular housing proposal at 175 Cummer Avenue. This letter is a guideline that can be edited and sent as the resident sees fit. The City failed to consult the community with respect to the selection of this site (175 Cummer Avenue) over all other possible locations. These parklands are a vital amenity for the hundreds seniors living on this property. This was acknowledged in 1998 by both the OMB and the City of North York Council committee led by the Councillor John Filion himself. Furthermore, City’s Planning department has identified a long list of problems with the project as it does not comply with many basic zoning by-law requirements. Requirements that are intended to ensure proper land development and the protection of community interests. This project should not be fast-tracked by the Province of Ontario with an “MZO” as requested by the City. The City’s secrecy, failure to consult, non-compliance with basic development requirements, and refusal to acknowledge the permanent damage that would be caused by destroying a valuable and protected community asset enjoyed by the elderly residents of Willowdale Manor Care Home and the community at large, means that the City should be required to follow the normal process which includes citizens’ normal rights to be heard and to appeal to an independent tribunal.
